Telegram has evolved into one of the world’s leading messaging platforms, now boasting over 1 billion monthly active users globally as of 2026. This massive growth has turned it into a powerful hub for sharing all kinds of content, including media files like photos, videos, documents, and more.

Unfortunately, this openness has attracted a significant wave of online piracy. Numerous public channels and groups are dedicated to illegally distributing pirated movies, TV series, music albums, e-books, cracked software, and other copyrighted materials. These channels often go further by promoting external pirate websites that host direct download links or torrents for the same infringing content.

Every day, thousands of such files are uploaded and shared by piracy networks operating on Telegram. Many of these operations have become highly automatedโ€”using bots or scripts to rapidly post large volumes of new material, allowing the spread to accelerate even faster.

Content protection teams, like ours, actively monitor these activities and submit reports directly to Telegram’s support team whenever we identify infringing uploads of the works we represent. In response, Telegram frequently removes the reported channels, posts, or files. Despite these efforts, however, the overall ecosystem of piracy on the platform continues to expand dramatically. New channels appear constantly, and the total number of infringing groups and files often multiplies by two or three times daily.

Channels created just six months ago frequently spawn multiple sister groups, cross-promoting each new one to their existing audiences to rapidly build subscribers. In extreme cases, some piracy-focused channels have amassed subscriber counts approachingโ€”or even exceedingโ€”half a million users.

Several factors explain why Telegram has become such a hotspot for internet piracy:

  • The widespread adoption of smartphones and tablets has made it incredibly convenient for people to discover, download, stream, and share large media files on the go.
  • Telegram offers seamless cross-platform functionality, including a full-featured desktop app that mirrors the mobile experience, enabling easy access for both mobile and PC users.

Telegram’s approach to handling copyright complaints involves targeted restrictions rather than uniform global takedowns. In many instances, when reports are submitted (including formal DMCA notices), the platform applies blocks selectivelyโ€”often limiting access only within the App Store (iOS) or Google Play ecosystem. As a result, while pirated content may disappear for iOS users, it frequently remains fully accessible to those on Android devices or using the desktop/web versions.

This platform-specific enforcement creates an important caveat for rights holders: after submitting a copyright report or DMCA claim, always verify removal across all platforms (iOS, Android, desktop, and web). What appears deleted on one version of the app might still be widely available on others.

In summary, while Telegram remains a versatile and privacy-focused messenger beloved by hundreds of millions, its architecture and enforcement practices continue to enable persistent large-scale copyright infringement. Rights owners must stay vigilant, report violations promptly, and carefully check the status of infringing content across different client versions to ensure effective protection of their intellectual property.
